Brand Highlight: Pentel®

What’s your favorite pen in your desk? For many people, Pentel® is their go-to brand, both for their style and their quality. But what makes Pentel such a top-tier brand, and how did it get that way? Today, we’re deep diving into the history of the Pentel company, their contributions to the world of writing, and how you can harness their high-quality products for your own branding success.

History of Pentel

The Pentel company is an innovative institution that goes back over 75 years. It started in Japan as a traditional calligraphy store, founded by Yukio Horie. He sought to nourish the creative spirit in his customers, creating a new tool called the “Pentel,” a crayon and pastel blend that features the strengths of each. Since then, they have paved new paths in their industry by pioneering new writing instruments.

What Types of Pens Did Pentel Invent?

Some of their most notable contributions to your world of art and writing include:

  • The Felt-Tipped Pen: If you have any markers on your desk, thank Pentel! In 1962, Pentel released the first “fiber-tip” pen, made with bamboo fibers, likely inspired by the traditional calligraphy brushes. Later, these were made with synthetic fibers. Known as the Sign Pen, their first fiber-tip pen was famously used by US President, Lyndon B. Johnson, to sign official documents. In the Philippines, any marker is still referred to as a “Pentel pen,” regardless of the brand.
  • The Rollerball Pen: Do you love the fast-flowing, smooth writing experience you get with a rollerball pen? While there is some uncertainty over who really invented the rollerball pen, Ohto or Pentel, it is undeniable that Pentel innovated the industry with their Cushion Ball Tip™ technology used in their “Rolling Writer Rollerball Pen.”
  • The Mechanical Pencil: Do you have a mechanical pencil you love? Again, thank Pentel! In 1960, they released the “Pentel Pencil,” the world’s first 0.9mm knock-type mechanical pencil with Hi-Polymer graphite lead, a pioneer in the world of graphite lead. In 2014, they updated their design and the craft of mechanical pencils to include a new mechanism to protect lead from breaking, along with a 0.2mm lead size.
  • The Hi-Polymer Eraser: You know that white eraser that actually works, as opposed to those brittle pink ones at the end of most pencils? That’s called a Hi-Polymer eraser, a latex-free creation made of polyvinyl chloride that erases cleanly without tearing through your paper. This was also invented by Pentel, and if you haven’t tried using one before… start now. Your art will thank you.

What Makes Pentel Pens Special

Innovation: Pentel isn’t a brand that is satisfied to release the same technology as everyone else. Their dedication to quality has lead to significant innovations in the art and writing industries, including technology that is still used and relied on today.

Creativity: According to their website, the Pentel company’s mission is to “create the tools that enable people everywhere to give form to their inner thoughts and feelings, and to cultivate the joy of expressing themselves.” In their dedication to customers’ creativity, they have produced products that offer new ways for customers to express themselves, starting from their initial pastel/crayon creation that forged their name.

Quality: Pentel products are all made within their own company-owned and operated factories, ensuring maximum oversight to every part of the process and allowing them the flexibility to update their own technology as new innovations are made. According to their site, “Pentel is also the only writing instrument company to ever receive the Deming Prize for recognition of the highest standard of quality.”

Eye to the Future: Pentel is a company with deep roots in the history of pens, but they are always keeping their eye on the future. Not only do they create innovative products and writing technology, they also have a waste-saving internal program they call “Recycology.” This program delivers products made from at least 50% recycled materials, cutting down on landfill waste while still delivering on their promise of outstanding quality.

How to Use Pentel Pens to Promote Your Business

Pentel’s quality and innovation isn’t just for their own benefit. It can be used to help advance your own business, as well! Here are some ways you can pair your name with the technology and style of Pentel promotional pens:
