15 Engaging and Fun Holidays in March to Inspire Your Next Promotion

One of those awkward in-between months that doesn’t have a lot of holidays (besides St. Patrick’s Day,) March sure could use something exciting to help keep you and your customers going until spring finally hits. Boost your customer engagement and your own morale with these seriously fun holidays in March!

How to Promote Your Business with Weird Holiday Marketing

Funny national holidays like What If Pets Had Opposable Thumbs Day may seem like just something to fill a calendar, but these holidays are a great opportunity to engage with your customers and get them excited about your brand. Here are just a few ways businesses are using weird, silly, inspirational, and international holidays to create fun and tasteful marketing content.

  • Inspired Sales: Find the weird national holidays that connect to your industry and use them to inspire exciting deals for your customers. For example, restaurants can win over customers with a complementary and unique cereal-based treat on National Cereal Day.
  • Contests: Just like many businesses offer prizes for costume contests on Halloween, you can offer promotional merch as prizes for contests like solving a complex word puzzle on National Puzzle Day.
  • Social Media Content: Get customers engaged with your social media pages by asking how they’ll celebrate your favorite March social media holidays, and share images of how you’re celebrating, too!
  • Create Local Traditions: Found a holiday that jives perfectly with your brand? Do something big to celebrate every year and get people coming to your door! Decorate, host an event, offer free samples, or even create your own branded giveaways to commemorate what you will make into a new local tradition.
  • Coordinate With Another Business: Is a holiday not particularly relevant to your industry? Find another small business who can help you create an engaging promotion that both of you benefit from!

Pro tip: While March has quite a few religious and cultural holidays like Ramadan, you don’t want to use these holidays purely for promotional reasons. It’s good to acknowledge the holidays of major religions and cultures, but using them to promote your business when you have no inherent connection is in poor taste and will offend more customers than it excites. Be tasteful and respectful whenever you address cultural or religious celebrations.

15 Inspiring, Wacky, and Funny Holidays in March 2023

1. Plan a Solo Vacation Day

March 1

Travel industry, this is your day! Everyone needs some time to themselves, whether they’re singles who are tired of playing nice on Tinder to parents who haven’t had a solo bathroom break in years. Market the ultimate gift to yourself with discounts on weekend flights, single-bedroom hotel bookings, dining with a table for one, and destination attraction ticket deals.

2. National Employee Appreciation Day

March 3

Can you have too many days in a year appreciating your employees? Nope! These are the people who are keeping you running, interacting with your customers, and in general acting as the blood and guts of your business. Plus, customers love employers who appreciate their hard-working employees, so shower those employees with swag, gift cards, social media highlights, and all of the love that is appropriate in a boss-employee relationship.

3. National White Chocolate Cheesecake Day

March 6

I’m going to be honest, I didn’t know this existed until I heard about this holiday, and now I HAVE to have it. White chocolate? And cheesecake? Together? Shops and restaurants, put this on your social media, parade it on your dessert carts and display shelves, because this sweet, sweet treat is going to have curious and hungry customers flocking to your doors. Even the white chocolate haters aren’t going to be able to resist trying something this beautiful!

4. National Library Worker’s Day

March 7

Libraries are what keep our society running, offering free access to books, computers, and other resources that you simply can’t find anywhere else. This day is all about giving appreciation to the hard working people who keep these societal powerhouses running with community activities, endless maintenance, and personal help navigating all that the library offers. If you’re looking for a great way to give back to your community as a local business, support your library workers!

5. International Women’s Day

March 8

Let’s shake that glass ceiling with a day that’s all about women and all that they do. Got a women-owned business? Have hardworking women on your staff? Know a woman that deserves a bit of recognition? This March social media holiday is the day when those women can take the spotlight with no apologies and no imposter syndrome. Share women’s stories on social media, your website, and everywhere else your customers regularly interact with your business.

6. National Popcorn Day

March 9

Popcorn is more than just a movie treat (though this day is a great marketing opportunity for theaters as well.) Shops and grocers can celebrate with popcorn balls, gourmet popcorn flavors, popcorn in ice cream cones, and more! Sweet treats like this are easy to make and offer easy marketing for increased foot traffic. You can also share awesome recipes on your social media to boost engagement, and even hold a contest to see what popcorn treat your customers want you to share for National Popcorn Day!

7. National Preschoolers Day

March 10

If you’ve ever had a toddler, you know that there is a woeful lack of activities you can do outside the house with them. As a business, you can give back to your community and help mothers have fun with their tots by offering activities for National Preschoolers Day. You can host a reading time, set up a toddler-safe play space, host a toddler fair at your local park, or even just have a “take your toddler to a restaurant guilt-free” day.

8. Alfred Hitchcock Day

March 12

Another excellent promotional opportunity for movie theaters, Alfred Hitchcock Day is your chance to bring in the crowds by offering big-screen viewings of these old horror classics. Perfect for film students and anyone who loves a solid classic, you don’t even have to be a theater to get in on the viewing action. Other businesses can partner with their local theaters or offer a movie-in-the-park event to spread the Hitchcock cheer, or you know, Hitchcock terror.

9. National Pi Day

March 14

Math lovers and pie lovers unite, it’s Pi Day! If you’ve never had a pie on Pi Day, you’re missing out. Restaurants and bakeries, offer a free slice of pie to anyone who can recite Pi up to 12 decimals, or host a contest on your social media for the prize of a free pie. You can also celebrate pie in general with unique flavors and recipes, discount offers, and more. No matter what your business is, the very least you should do for this unique holiday in March is celebrate with a pie for your employees and a social post showing your awesome Pi Day celebrations.

10. National Vaccination Day

March 16

Promote a healthier community with your own National Vaccination Day celebration. While getting stuck with a needle isn’t exactly the most fun way to celebrate a holiday, people need all the encouragement they can get to get up to date on all of their vaccinations. Offer in-office vaccinations for your employees, and consider hosting space for your local clinics to provide free or low-cost vaccinations to the community. After all, the more people get vaccinated, the fewer sick days in your own future.

11. Extraterrestrial Abductions Day

March 20

Have you been abducted by aliens? Well, luckily you don’t need to be to enjoy this holiday. Get weird with your own alien-themed festivities, ranging from sharing crazy historical accounts online to having your own green men pay customers a photo-op in your place of business. Whether you’re trying something simple with chocolate dirt desserts from another planet or something adventurous like a full-blown party, funny holidays in March like this are a great way to get customers excited to engage with your business.

12. National Healthy Fats Day

March 21

Fats get a bad rap for something our bodies need to survive. But not all fats are created equal. Today is a day for celebrating those healthy fats that lower your bad cholesterol and raise your good cholesterol (yes, that’s a thing!) Businesses, take this opportunity to educate your customers about the healthy fats in the products you offer and what benefits they offer. While fats in general, like anything, should be eaten in moderation, today is the day to go all out with your avocados, nuts, seeds, and fish.

13. International Goof Off Day

March 22

It’s no coincidence (I think) that this falls on the same day as “As Young As You Feel Day.” This day is all about letting loose, having fun, and ignoring that weird back pain that haunts your day to day. Local activity businesses, like trampoline parks and laser tag arenas, this is your big chance to host an event that will get everyone moving! Sure, they might be stiffer in the morning, but for this one day, everyone is 20 again!

14. National Something-On-A-Stick Day

March 28

Corn dogs, shish-kabobs, cotton-candy, fondu, corn, popsicles, and just about anything deep fried is all fair game on this day! All about the popular fair foods of your childhood, today is the day to get indulgent. Fairly easy for any restaurant, movie theater, and even car dealership to accommodate, offering a complementary or discounted treat to customers on these sorts of fun holidays in March is a great way to increase foot traffic while putting customers in an explorative mood.

15. National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day

March 29

Waiting for a holiday that’s all about small businesses? Today’s your day! Share your origin story on social media, host a big sale to boost foot traffic, or even host a fair for all of the small businesses in your community to strut their stuff. This holiday is all about supporting local businesses like yours and learning more about what hidden treasures live in your community.

Didn’t find a holiday that suits you? These are just a few of the many fun holidays in March that can inspire your next promotion.
